The city's budget office says the city is not hiring. Denver's city job listings tell a different story. How can we trust them to be truthful about the budget?

Hiring freeze
Hickenlooper mandated the first furlough day for city employees back in March, if I recall correctly. That's around the same time he laid off sheriff deputies.

Hick then made two high-profile hires -- Eric Brown as his communications director and David T. Roberts as his customer service chief. See the city's press release from April 1.

I'm not sure when the current hiring freeze (or alleged hiring freeze) went into effect. Also, hiring seasonal workers such as lifeguards is not the same as hiring salaried staffers. As I said elsewhere, hiring at DIA doesn't really count because I'm pretty sure DIA is separate from the general fund.

So maybe "lying" is a bit strong.

Apologies
You didn't say "lying." I confused your post with this comment I guess.

To further compound my mistake of responding to a comment in the wrong thread, I'll continue.

Yes, I do think a lot of city employees act as if We The Public are stupid. You know what? A lot of times we are. Well maybe not stupid. Just ignorant of all the facts, of which there are intricate thousands. So I can sort of understand city staffers being condescending when they try to discuss complex topics with the general public.

You shouldn't need a law degree and a masters in public administration to understand city hall or to comment about your experience and perception of city government. But if you don't have the credentials, and your tone is critical, you're likely to be dismissed as a crank who has an unreasonable mistrust of government.

Not that there's anything wrong with being a crank. I'm not sure what my point is here, other than to say, maybe, let's not be so hard on the people who work for the city and who are obviously knowledgeable and care about doing a good job. Specifically, I doubt that Stephanie Adams is deliberately trying to mislead us about the hiring freeze.

Facebook on city time
I know you need to be apologist for city employees since you are married to one. I just read where Mayor Hickenlooper's staff spends time managing and updating Hicks FACEBOOK page.

This is what these people get paid for. Outrageous. Smoke and mirrors while they raid funds the TAXPAYERS will have to pay back.

Can we please just agree that discussion of or speculation about personal/private lives is a pointless distraction?

Is the city hiring or not?
Should be a yes or no answer.
